Automated Board Measurement and RFID Tracking System for Lumber Mill

A large lumber company desired a better system for tracking board feet and grading boards on more accurate basis, all while eliminating discrepancies as they exited a planer.

Utilizing Genesys Controls engineers' vision systems experience, a system was developed that measured boards on the fly, placed the proper RFID tag for grading purposes on each board, and tracked their total board feet. The project consisted of an automated system that dynamically measured the board-foot area of the boards leaving the planer, and tracked them as they were conveyed to the eight pull lanes and the stacker. Each lane was totalized with the board feet values of each board at each lane. The end result was improved tracking of total board feet throughput, better grading, and greater accuracy in the separation of the lumber.
